Biography

"My fascination with ophthalmology, and specifically with retinal surgery, began when I was a medical student in Germany. I spent one month with the late Professor Klaus Heimann who became my mentor and was instrumental in my future career."

Dr. Rezaei completed medical school at the University of Cologne in Germany (M.D., 1993). Following his graduation, he joined the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Cologne. His desire for getting the best training and having the most advanced research opportunities led him to the United States. He joined the University of Chicago in 1995. He continued his research in the field of cell transplantation as a treatment for age-related macular degeneration for the following decade.

Dr. Rezaei completed his residency at the University of Chicago and served as the Chief resident in his final year. He completed his fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit and returned to Chicago and joined the University of Chicago as the Director of Vitreoretinal Service. He was principal investigator of multiple clinical trials, Director of Vitreoretinal Fellowship, member of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and member of the Laser Committee. Dr. Rezaei is currently Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center.

"Every day I try to give the best care possible to my patients. I believe it is a great honor to have the opportunity to participate in their care and to improve the health of their eyes. It is also very rewarding to have the privilege to improve the quality of life of others."

"My decision to join Illinois Retina Associates was an easy one. It not only fulfilled my desire to provide the state-of-the-art medical and surgical treatment to my patients but also enabled me to join a group of outstanding individuals with an international reputation. My academic affiliation also allows me to continue teaching and pursue my research interests."

When I'm not being a doctor...

Dr. Rezaei and his wife, Lili, have two sons. He enjoys spending all his spare time with his family, especially coaching his sons in soccer and watching their athletic activities. Dr. Rezaei also enjoys tennis, skiing and Formula One.
