Biography
"When very young I was always intrigued by physicians and with the work they did. It was their care and concern that nurtured my interest in medicine," recalls Dr. Orth.
His dream came true. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S. in bacteriology) in 1964, he attended Chicago Medical School (M.D., 1969) and served his internship and residency at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Orth chose the field of ophthalmology "because I thought that the eye was such a small organ, it would be something I would be able to master. Lo and behold, I was wrong. The diagnosis and management of the various retina problems a person can get is never ending. The eye and the retina really reflect many things that are going on in the body as a whole."
This decision was followed by a series of fellowships, including a Heed Fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University. Today Dr. Orth is professor of ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, and Director of the Irwin Retina Center at Ingalls Memorial Hospital.
In 1976 he founded Illinois Retina Associates because he realized the need for a state-of-the-art medical and surgical retina practice that could make immediate application of advances in retinal research. That principle still guides the growth of Illinois Retina today.
"What I like about this practice is that we're on the cutting edge of dealing with the most common causes of blindness. One of the most gratifying aspects of my work is spending time with the patient in trying to alleviate their anxiety over their eye problem."
Dr. Orth is principal investigator for a number of NIH and NEI research projects and clinical studies. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Retina. He is listed in The Best Doctors in America. In 1994 he was recognized with the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Senior Honor Award. His book, Color and Fluorescein Angiographic Atlas of Retinal/Vascular Disorders, was honored by the American Publishers Association as the best new book in the field of medicine and science.
When I'm not being a doctor...
Dr. Orth has been able to combine his love of ophthalmology and love of sports by serving both the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox as team ophthalmologist. He and his wife, Barbara, have two children, Joel and Dina and four grandchildren, Emily, Aaron, Elaina and Naomi.
