Biography
Dr. Cohen became a doctor for a mix of practical and emotional reasons: "Rationally, I knew that I wanted a career I could devote a lifetime to. Something permanent but always changing. Something interesting. And if it involved new technology, all the better."
At the same time, he admits that when you're young, you're impressionable. "The adults who made an impression on me were all in healthcare."
After graduating from Rush Medical College, he completed his residency at Rush University Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship in ocular oncology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Rush/Ingalls.
Why ophthalmology? "Because to me it's the most interesting field of medicine. You can actually see disease. When you look in a patient's eye, 99 percent of the time you can make the diagnosis right then and there."
Dr. Cohen likes retinal surgery "because it's much more challenging than the typical eye surgery." His other medical interest, ocular oncology, gives him the opportunity to provide patients with medical care that's hard to find.
"Tumors of the eye are rare, but they need to be taken care of. There are few doctors with the training and experience to diagnose and treat this condition. It's an opportunity for me to help."
That's also what he likes about Illinois Retina Associates. "This is a group of very nice, highly ethical people. Their first priority is the safety and benefit of their patients. The focus here is always on providing well-thought-out quality care."
Dr. Cohen is an associate professor of ophthalmology at Rush Medical College and he is the program director of the residency program at Rush University Medical Center.
When I'm not being a doctor...
Dr. Cohen and his wife enjoy spending time with their family and are very involved with their children's activities.
