Biography
Dr. Pollack's interest in ophthalmology is virtually hereditary. "My father is an ophthalmologist and his love for the profession has always been contagious."
It also helped that the ophthalmologist's son has had a strong interest in the sciences for as long as he can remember. Add to that the enjoyment of "helping people, solving problems and mastering challenges" - and John Pollack was on the road to medical school.
After getting his B.A. degree in biology at Washington University (St. Louis), he obtained both his M.S. in physiology and a medical degree from Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.). He then returned to St. Louis for his medical internship at Jewish Hospital. Dr. Pollack then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Washington University, which was followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee).
"I find the field of ophthalmology tremendously satisfying because we now can do so much to preserve and improve vision, one of our most cherished senses. Ophthalmology provides me with the opportunity to combine my interest in research with medical and surgical treatment of the eye."
"Retinal diseases are often complex and challenging. This is often why these patients are referred to specialists such as Illinois Retina Associates. I find treating these types of cases stimulating and gratifying."
Dr. Pollack comes to Illinois Retina Associates from the Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee). He brings to Illinois Retina Associates broad experience in medical and surgical management of retinal disorders - enhanced by his continued involvement in clinical retina research.
Why Illinois Retina Associates? "This diverse group of excellently trained retinal surgeons share a common goal - to provide top-quality eye care in a compassionate manner. Illinois Retina Associates is also actively involved in clinical research. This allows us to make use of the latest technology that's of proven benefit in managing retinal disease. I find it personally satisfying that my goals and the goals of Illinois Retina Associates are the same."
