Biography
For Dr. Civantos, a medical profession was hereditary. "My father is a doctor and the example of seeing his work led me down the same path."
After earning his BA from Harvard, Dr. Civantos attended the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. That's when he decided upon ophthalmology.
"This is a field of medicine in which you can do a lot for people. There's something concrete you can do to help the average patient who comes in the door. With ophthalmology you're working with your hands and you can see the results of what you do. If you're dealing with a detached retina, when you see the patient after surgery, you can look in the eye and see the retina back in place. I enjoy that very much."
Dr. Civantos graduated from the residency program of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami. He went on to complete his fellowship at Rush Medical College and the Irwin Retina Center of Ingalls Memorial Hospital. That, in turn, led him to Illinois Retina Associates.
"Everyone here at Illinois Retina Associates is a top-notch doctor. If a patient of mine has an emergency and has to be seen by someone else, I know they're going to get excellent care."
Dr. Civantos is also an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago. He considers this a natural fit with the work he does at Illinois Retina Associates: "We're a practice that's on the cutting edge, involved in a lot of the latest clinical studies. We participate in a lot of the National Eye Institute research projects. We're very much in the forefront of new developments."
When I'm not being a doctor...
Dr. Civantos and his wife, Lilliam, have seven children, who account for most of his spare time. What little is left is devoted to biking, jogging and reading.
