Biography

Medicine is something I always wanted to do," says Dr. MacCumber. After graduating from Princeton, he earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins. That's also when he chose ophthalmology.

"At Johns Hopkins I worked in the lab of a vitreo-retinal surgeon who inspired me. I realized that ophthalmology was something I could do and that I would like to do. It's a field in which we can do a lot for patients."

Dr. MacCumber also likes the opportunity to combine science and the practice of medicine. To further that opportunity, he took an apparent detour to get his Ph.D. in the neurosciences and pharmacology from Johns Hopkins. That detour may prove to be the shortest route to the frontiers of ophthalmology.

"Other doctors in the group have a lot of experience in developing instruments. I balance this with my background. My Ph.D. in neurosciences and pharmacology is a good fit because the next frontier is combining therapeutics with the mechanics of eye surgery."

After graduating from the Fellowship Program at the Duke University Eye Center, he was appointed assistant chief of service at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute until 1996, when he joined Illinois Retina Associates.

"Illinois Retina Associates is a very supportive group. The rapport is excellent. We can combine research and clinical studies with patient care to push the edge of medicine."

Dr. MacCumber is an associate professor of ophthalmology and associate chairman of Ophthalmology for Research at Rush University Medical Center. He has edited a popular book on the management of eye emergencies and has authored over 30 major clinical and research publications.

When I'm not being a doctor...

Dr. MacCumber and his wife, Judith, have a daughter, Abigail, and two sons, David and Ethan. He enjoys dining, theater and especially music. "My father was a jazz pianist with the big bands that used to play Chicago. I played oboe and saxophone. I still enjoy music - classical and jazz."
