Biography
A career in medicine was perhaps inevitable for Dr. de Bustros. "I was always interested in biology, in life. Especially human life and caring for people." Nor did he mind the long hours it took to get through medical school at Lebanon's American University of Beirut. "I learned from my parents the value of hard work and discipline."
Dr. de Bustros’ first interest was internal medicine, hematology and oncology. "I found these specialties intellectually stimulating, but frustrating. I wanted a field in which I could use my hands and help people get more tangible results."
After completing a residency and fellowships in medical and surgical retina at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins, he joined the full-time faculty there. He was appointed assistant, then associate professor in ophthalmology and director of the Eye Trauma Center. While there, through extensive research, teaching and publications, he developed a national reputation in the field of retina.
"I was in academics for ten years. Now I am in private practice with academic affiliation. Illinois Retina Associates, a group of unique individuals with a national reputation, gives me the best of both worlds. I can concentrate on providing people with quality care and still do teaching and research. I can easily communicate with close colleagues about problem cases. I have more flexibility and control in my professional life."
"Being part of The Retina Center is a great opportunity to combine first class retina care with teaching and clinical research, in addition to having close contact with a unique group of highly talented physicians."
Dr. de Bustros is an associate professor of ophthalmology at Rush Medical College and medical director of The Retina Center at the Community Hospital in Munster, IN. He has served as chairman, reviewer, principal investigator and co-investigator in research projects and continues to be involved in clinical studies through the NIH, NEI and other organizations. He is a recipient of several awards and is active in several professional societies. He is a scientific referee for several publications.
When I'm not being a doctor...
His wife, Andrée, is also a doctor. Their careers leave them little free time together. "What time we have goes to our children. They give us a daily fresh look at life and its wonders."
