Biography
Dr. Hasan was born in Montreal but raised in California. That was only the beginning of his long and circuitous route that brought him to Illinois Retina Associates - a route that took him to the tops of mountains, the bottoms of oceans and scientific fields related to the eye.
Dr. Hasan's interest in vision began early on. In grade seven, he one first place at the Los Angeles County Science Fair with his project "The Electric Eye."
Later, during his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology (Dalhousie University) he pursued vision research. He went on to complete a Ph.D. in neuroscience (University of British Columbia). He then received an "irresistible" offer to continue his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
While there he found that he enjoyed working with patients. So he got his medical degree (with honors) from the University of Toronto.
"My wife, who was also in medical school, suggested ophthalmology. It was a great idea. I had a background in vision research, I liked the elegance of the microsurgery, the technology that was used and the chance to make a big difference for patients," says Dr. Hasan.
After completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto affiliated hospitals, he went on to complete his retina fellowship at Rush University Medical Center where he is now an assistant professor of ophthalmology.
"I consider myself fortunate to be part of Illinois Retina Associates. It's an excellent group of doctors with an international reputation. It offers me both the opportunity for academic research and, more important, the chance to work with and help patients. It's a great bonus that my wife and I have family in the Chicago area" says Dr. Hasan.
When I'm not being a doctor...
Dr. Hasan has always had an eye for heights. He is an avid mountain climber. He took advantage of his time in Switzerland to climb every major mountain in the Swiss Alps.
He has also gone from the heights to the depths.
"I also like to scuba dive when I have time. I'm a certified diver and my wife recently became certified," says Dr. Hasan. He and his wife, who is also a doctor, enjoy traveling, hiking and diving around the world.
