What Is A Retina Specialist?
A retina specialist is a highly trained medical doctor that specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of conditions affecting the retina and the vitreous gel in the back of the eye. This subspecialty is sometimes known as vitreoretinal medicine. A retina specialist undergoes many years of training after college, including four years of medical school, a one-year general medical internship, a three-year residency in comprehensive ophthalmology, and one to two years of additional subspecialty fellowship training.
The retina experts at Illinois Retina Associates limit their practice to the evaluation and treatment of severe ocular injuries, and blinding diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Tears and Detachment, and Central Serous Retinopathy.
Our practice does not provide primary eye care services such as prescribing eyeglasses, evaluating problems involving the front of the eye, treating cataracts or performing LASIK surgery. Illinois Retina Associates doctors treat patients who have been referred by a comprehensive ophthalmologist, optometrist, general practitioner, or endocrinologist that has determined they have a potentially serious disease involving the retina and/or vitreous gel in the back of the eye.
