J. D. Wilgucki II, MD

John D. Wilgucki II, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of retina and macular diseases. His clinical expertise includes the management of complex vitreoretinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes, along with extensive experience in secondary intraocular lens procedures.
A native of Freehold, New Jersey, Dr. Wilgucki’s journey into ophthalmology was inspired by his father, a dedicated ophthalmologist who served their community.
Dr. Wilgucki graduated with Highest Honors from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, earning a B.S in Biology, with a minor in Business and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He went on to receive his medical degree from Rutgers- Robert Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, where he was recognized with the academic excellence award at graduation.
Dr. Wilgucki completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Emory Eye Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He then pursued an advanced two-year fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, training under world renowned specialists. There he was honored with both the Best Teaching Fellow Award and the Doctor Guy H Chan, Fellow Education Award, a testament to both his clinical skill and his commitment to education.
Dr. Wilgucki has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He presents regularly at leading national meetings, including the American Society of Retinal Specialist, Vit-Buckle Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Passionate about mentorship, he dedicates time to guiding medical students, residents, as well as fellows, nurturing their growth and fostering a passion for ophthalmology and the visual sciences.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Wilgucki cherishes time with his wife, a plastic surgeon, and their two young daughters in Chicago. A lifelong athlete, he remains active through multisport participation, personal training and unwavering support of his favorite teams. Whether playing sports, cooking, or dancing to music with his girls, he treasures every moment with his family. Their golden retriever, Duck, is never far behind, adding joy to their everyday adventure.
Dr. Wilgucki joined Illinois Retina in 2025 and is seeing patients in our Glenview locations.
