Fard Sara, MD

Dr. Sara Fard is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal surgery. Born in Iran and raised in Toronto, Canada, Dr. Fard's academic and personal journey reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, compassion, and service. After earning top honors throughout her education—including the Dean’s List every semester at the University of Toronto—she completed her undergraduate studies in Physiology and Nutritional Sciences, graduating in the top 10% of her class.
Dr. Fard earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she graduated in the top third of her class and received recognition for clinical research in nutritional science. It was during medical school that she discovered her passion for ophthalmology—drawn to the profound impact of restoring vision and the precision required for ocular microsurgery.
She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she served in numerous leadership roles and cultivated her passion for retina through hands-on experience managing complex pathologies, including diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments. Her early background in physiology and nutrition shaped her approach to both prevention and treatment of retinal disease.
Dr. Fard went on to complete an intensive two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the University of Louisville. As the sole fellow in a high-volume program, she received advanced surgical training under the mentorship of highly experienced retinal specialists, operating three days a week year-round. This experience solidified her expertise in complex retinal procedures and her reputation for precision, focus, and professionalism.
Known for her calm demeanor, attention to detail, and genuine empathy, Dr. Fard combines her deep clinical knowledge with a patient-centered approach. Outside of the operating room, she maintains an active lifestyle and enjoys exploring Chicago’s vibrant neighborhoods, always grounded in her belief in the power of preventive health and wellness.
Dr. Fard joined Illinios Retina in 2025 and is seeing patients in our Harvey and Rush offices.
