Nicole Somani, MD
Dr. Nicole “Nikki” Somani is an American Board of Ophthalmology–certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula.
Dr. Somani grew up in Munster, Indiana before moving to California, where she attended UCLA and graduated with College Honors. While at UCLA, she wrote for the science and health section of The Daily Bruin, an experience that helped her appreciate how deeply medicine can impact patients’ lives and inspired her to pursue a career as a physician.
Dr. Somani completed her ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where she trained in a diverse, high-volume clinical environment. Her experience at Ben Taub Hospital, Houston’s renowned public safety-net teaching hospital, was especially meaningful and gave her the opportunity to care for a wide range of patients with complex medical and surgical eye disease.
She then completed fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the country’s leading academic ophthalmology departments. During fellowship, she received the Iowa Eye 2026 Surgical Video Award, recognizing excellence in surgical video presentation.
Dr. Somani has published 15 peer-reviewed papers, presented at national meetings, and received the U.S. Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award. She enjoys teaching residents and fellows and is committed to providing thoughtful, compassionate care that helps patients feel informed and supported throughout their treatment.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Somani enjoys playing tennis, learning new languages, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Somani joined Illinois Retina in September 2026 and is seeing patients in our Munster & Oak Park offices.
