On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Dr. Sohail Hasan—retina specialist at Illinois Retina Associates and Chair of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s OPHTHPAC Committee—was an invited speaker at the Shugarman Ophthalmology Advocacy Program, hosted virtually by the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
This annual program is a premier forum that brings together leaders in ophthalmology, government relations, and organized medicine to highlight current advocacy initiatives and encourage greater physician engagement in policy-making. Dr. Hasan presented during the final session of the evening, representing the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s OPHTHPAC. His remarks emphasized the importance of sustained grassroots advocacy, the continued threat of inappropriate scope expansion, and the critical need for physician leadership at the federal level.
The evening's program also featured insights from U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD, leaders from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology, Miami Ophthalmological Society, Florida Medical Association, and the AAO Surgical Scope Fund, as well as government affairs representatives from the University of Miami.
Dr. Hasan was honored to represent both Illinois Retina Associates and Retina Consultants of America at this influential national event and commends Bascom Palmer for its leadership in cultivating the next generation of ophthalmic advocates.
