On May 20, 2026, Sohail Hasan MD, PhD, FACS, FASRS, FRCSC participated as an invited speaker at the 2026 Shugarman Ophthalmology Advocacy Program hosted by Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. The advocacy program brought together nationally recognized ophthalmology leaders, physician advocates, and policymakers to discuss many of the most pressing issues facing ophthalmology and patient care today. Dr. Hasan presented a federal advocacy update focused on:
• Medicare physician payment reform
• Prior authorization reform
• Federal VA scope of practice concerns
• Ongoing advocacy efforts to protect physician-led care and patient access
The program also featured remarks from physician-legislator Mariannette Miller-Meeks, as well as leaders from organized ophthalmology and healthcare advocacy.
During his presentation, Dr. Hasan also shared highlights from the 2026 Congressional Advocacy Day in Washington, DC, where nearly 500 ophthalmologists and trainees met directly with members of Congress to advocate for patients and the future of ophthalmology.
Special thanks to Dr. Stephen Schwartz and Dr. Eduardo Alfonso for the invitation and for their continued leadership in advocacy education.
