Dr. Sohail Hasan Represents Illinois Retina Associates at AAO 2026 in New Orleans
Illinois Retina Associates was represented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's (AAO) 2026 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, where ophthalmologists from around the world gathered to exchange scientific advances, discuss challenges facing medicine, and help shape the future of eye care.
Sohail Hasan MD, PhD, FACS, FASRS, FRCSC, an Illinois Retina Associates partner and nationally recognized advocacy leader, delivered a presentation at Retina Subspecialty Day entitled “The Future of Ophthalmology Is in Your Hands.”
His presentation addressed critical issues affecting ophthalmology, including Medicare physician reimbursement, prior authorization, surgical scope-of-practice expansion, and preservation of the National Eye Institute. He also highlighted the roles of OPHTHPAC and the newly expanded Safe Surgery Action Fund in protecting physician-led eye care.
“Practicing good medicine requires advocacy for our patients,” Dr. Hasan emphasized, encouraging fellow ophthalmologists to become actively involved in protecting their patients and profession.
The meeting also marked a significant milestone in Dr. Hasan's national leadership. As he completes his fifth and final year as Chair of the Academy's OPHTHPAC Committee, colleagues recognized his service with a commemorative crystal award.
During the combined OPHTHPAC and State Affairs reception, Dr. Hasan expressed his appreciation to the Academy's physician leadership, advocacy staff, and committee members for their dedication and friendship.
He also hosted the OPHTHPAC Committee dinner and board meeting, marking the culmination of five years of collaboration and accomplishments in federal advocacy.
In addition to his Academy responsibilities, Dr. Hasan serves as Chair of the Retina Consultants of America(RCA) Advocacy Committee. During the annual meeting, he hosted an RCA Advocacy Committee dinner attended by fellow retina specialists and representatives of the AAO, RCA and Cencora. The gathering provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration on healthcare policy issues affecting retina specialists and the patients they serve.
Through his leadership in national advocacy organizations, Dr. Hasan continues to advance the interests of patients and physicians while helping shape policies that affect the delivery of quality eye care.
Illinois Retina Associates is proud of its physicians' involvement in national education, professional leadership, and advocacy—and their ongoing commitment to protecting sight and advancing retinal care.
